Erfurt is the capital and largest city of Thuringia, a state in central Germany. While it’s a popular destination for German tourists, it’s often overlooked in favor of bigger or more well-known cities by foreign tourists. There are so many reasons to visit the city, from its old town being one of the most intact medieval cities in Germany to seeing the Dom St. Marien, where Martin Luther was ordained. I’m looking forward to sharing all of the details about our day trip to Erfurt, but I simply couldn’t wait to get my photos of the lovely half-timbered houses that I saw there out into the world. Enjoy.
Half-Timbered Houses in Erfurt.
Along the iconic Krämerbrücke (Merchants’ bridge).
The above photo is the “house of the foundations”, and you can actually go inside and view most of it for free. I love the small details in the windows and along the front that add to this homes’ charm.
More homes near the city center.
At the Domplatz.
And more found during our walk along the river and various canals.
I love the rather unusual orange details on that one.
Thanks for taking a virtual stroll with me to admire Erfurt’s lovely half-timbered houses.

Yay, Erfurt! I visited around two years ago and was astonished by how beautiful the city was. I definitely wasn't expecting a place filled with so many half-timbered houses and so much medieval architecture. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit there, too!
It was definitely a surprise – I hope it becomes a more popular place to visit.
I love half-timbered houses and I love these pictures! I'm even more determined to visit Erfurt now 🙂
Thanks! You will have a great time when you do get to visit. 🙂
love these houses!
Thanks Tanja!
These houses are very nice, I love this style ! I've seen some in Alsace (East of France, close to Germany) and I find it very picturesque !
Nothing says Europe (or Germany) more than half timbered houses. I love them! We have a few in Belgium, and usually more as you get towards the German border.
They just add something unique to the house I think.

I agree! It can make the house much more interesting.
I am an Architecture graduate and I am drooling over the quirkiness of these houses! Thanks for sharing and I wish I can see these houses in person! #photofriday
Aw, yay. I hope you get to see some one day!
Such interesting and beautiful houses! #photofriday
Thank you!
These houses are beautiful and the whole town looks straight out of a fairytale book. Love the window boxes brimming with flowers. I've never heard of Erfurt but now want to go. My brother and his family live in Germany so I'll have to tell them about this. Thanks!
Erfurt is a lovely place to visit, I definitely recommend it. 🙂
I've wanted to visit Erfurt for a while now and your post has just pushed it towards the top! I LOOOVE half-timbered houses!
