Maybe it’s the variety of donuts available, the fact that they use 0% trans-fat oil, or the women who always serve us so kindly (and send us on our way with more than we ordered) that have made me come to love this place so much. Whatever it is, it has led me –along with many other people – to proclaim that MJ Donuts serves some of the best donuts I’ve ever had. And I don’t say things like that lightly.
MJ Donuts is located to the southwest of Charlotte in Pineville, NC. The small shop revolves around donuts, displaying a selection of cream filled donuts, cake donuts, cinnamon donuts, chocolate donuts, glazed donuts, and more during our most recent visit. There are a few other sweet options available such as eclairs, apple fritters, and cinnamon rolls. Aside from brewed coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, your drink options will mainly come from a well-stocked refrigerator offering milk, juice, soda, Starbucks drinks, or water.
So what is it about these donuts that makes me describe them with words like “best” and “ever” – descriptors that I normally avoid on this blog?
They are full of flavor, incredibly fresh, crisp, light, fluffy, and they lack the extreme levels of sugar and stickiness usually found at the big donut chains. Comparatively, MJ donuts taste healthier than others I’ve consumed (at least, they taste about as healthy as a fried dough confectionery can).
While I missed donuts during our time living abroad, I couldn’t handle how sweet they tasted to my adjusted taste buds once we returned home. Mr. Meena was often drawn to a Krispy Kreme “Hot Now” sign or a Dunkin Donuts store during our first month back in the USA, but I would decline his (many) offers to stop because donuts no longer seemed delicious enough to me to sacrifice so many calories for them. MJ Donuts has changed that – now I’m the one asking him if we should go for a donut (or four).
Mr. Meena’s coworkers have been telling us to try these donuts for about two and a half years now; how I wished we had listened to them sooner! The first time we visited, we ordered several donuts and received a bag of complimentary donut holes with our purchase. We visited again with our friends who were briefly in town and received a plate of four complimentary donuts instead (the shop had run out of donut holes). I asked the woman behind the counter if she was always so generous and she told me that she always adds something extra to an order and it depends on how much a customer spends, what they purchase, and what the shop has available that day.
Then on our way out the door, when the shop was closing for the day, she handed us two bags stuffed to the brim with donuts and apple fritters! We were so pleased (although it meant an extra work out or two) and ended up giving several of them away. The recipients loved them and eagerly asked where they came from.
Looking at the Google reviews for MJ Donuts, nearly everyone agrees that these are by far the best donuts around:
“Simply the best I’ve ever had. Variety similar to a Krispy Kreme, but with ten times more love added to the ingredients… MJ donuts achieve a melt-in-your-mouth consistency which, to me, exclaims perfection. This is donuts, mastered.”
“This Is Pineville’s best kept secret!! By far the best doughnuts in town”
“Awesome old fashioned buttermilk doughnuts included in their large selection. They really are hard to beat.”
The consensus is clear: these donuts are amazing and you definitely need to try them. Plus, you’ll be supporting a small, local business while enjoying some delicious donuts! It’s a win-win. And aren’t you practically jonesing for them at this point? I sure am!

Good point! And me too, I love looking for the non chain donut options.
These donuts look so simple but I am sure they are full of flavor (love when that happens). My husband is a fan of Krispy Kreme, so, I am sure he will love this place. Recently, we discovered a mom and pop shop in Santa Monica with some of the best donuts we have ever had. Those small places rock! #wanderfulwednesday
Agreed! Thanks. 🙂
I live in Charlotte and I LOVE that place. Especially the Apple Friter!
I’m so glad to hear that, Dan! Maybe I’ll see you there sometime!
